No question,
DE LA SOUL
is a non-conformist band. With their debut album “3 Feet High And Rising” in 1989 they penetrated a hip-hop scene that was dominated by commercialized music and monotonous artists. Swagger and status symbols dominated the culture of that time. Accordingly, the three New Yorkers Dave, Maseo and Pos were also conspicuous, offering an alternative for all hip-hop enthusiasts with their intelligent raps and their eye-catching sound, which they owed to the brilliant producer Prince Paul.
With the next album "De La Soul Is Dead" they parted with Prince Paul and their quite unusual beats and hit a somewhat harder and darker sound. Although they now dealt with more difficult topics and did not sound so unusual musically, they did not forfeit their complete innovation - they understood each other in criticizing and denouncing imbalances and did not stop at greats like MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice .
If their third album went under, they landed a little stroke of genius with “Stakes Is High” in 1996! The music market threatened to stall again, so of course De La Soul burst in between. Her album trilogy “Art Official Intelligence”, which she did not complete with a missing third part, should also cause a stir. Instead, in 2004 they released a whole new LP called "The Grint Date". There were also many interesting side projects for the band, for example they created an exclusive 45-minute song for runners for the sportswear manufacturer Nike.
De La Soul, even if they are regarded as a non-conformist hip-hop band, actually only represent the original ideas and values of a culture that did not want to be identified by “bling bling” or material things. The Native Tongue Movement, which they founded together with A Trible Called Quest and Jungle Brothers, is therefore also exemplary of the positive attitude towards life that the band embodies and which should be communicated to the outside world through their music. There are also well-known supporters of this group such as Mos Def or Jurassic 5, who want to move away from the aggressive and chubby hip-hop image.
So whether inadequate or maybe just original, De La Soul are popular and highly valued artists who, with their band, make the big festival stages as well as the well-known hip-hop clubs burn around the world.
