DJ KRUSH
is not only one of the main characters of the vibrant Tokyo scene, but an artist of international standing who is also known worldwide as the representative of the Sound Of Japan.
It all started for DJ KRUSH when he first saw the cult film Wildstyle in the early eighties. Motivated - and even shocked by the whole hip-hop culture of the time, this film made him become a DJ in the streets of Tokyo. After winning countless DJ contests, he founded the now legendary rap group Krush Posse in 1987, which received great media attention as the best hip-hop act in Japan.
After the group broke up in late 1992, DJ KRUSH began to advance his solo career. His debut album Krush, which was released in 1994, made his name known worldwide. The second album Strictly Turntablized, released on the English Mo'Wax label, entered the NME indie charts at number 2 and earned him popularity not only in Great Britain but also throughout Europe. Together with his label mate DJ Shadow, the leading music press celebrated him as the godfather of trip-hop and abstract hip-hop. Since then he has received and continues to receive countless offers for remixes and live performances with other artists, and when he releases new albums his name appears regularly in both the British and American dance charts.
However, his appearances are even more impressive. He is known as the turntable magician, on the one hand because of his insane club DJ sets, which regularly amaze the guests with open mouths, and on the other hand because of his live performances, during which he uses the two turntables and the mixer like live instruments used and exhaust their sound-related possibilities to the last. In freestyle sessions he even plays solo on his turntables. The musicians with whom he has jammed live together in the past were, for example, NAS, The Roots, Jhelisa, Omar, MC Solaar, DJ Shadow, DJ Spooky, Mick Kahn from the former JAPAN as well as well-known jazz and rock musicians of his Homeland.
He recently worked with his new DJ crew RYU (Fließen / Fluß) and the Nigerian percussionist Tunde Ayanyemi, and the audience was able to witness a unique dynamic, released by two rhythm groups alone. HipHop, Techno, Jazz, Dub, Rock: DJ KRUSH's sound is a crossover of many musical styles and is constantly innovative. The optical-visual elements and the instrumentation of his sound, which seems to become more and more minimalistic and atmospheric from album to album, stimulate the imagination of his listeners and can be far more seductive and agreeable than words.
